President's Message
THE MERRY MONTH OF MAY When I was a child (more years ago than I care to mention), the first of May was celebrated with handmade paper baskets filled with flowers to be placed on a neighbor’s doorstep. The girls wore pastel dresses, a wreath of flowers in their hair and danced around the Maypole. For all you evil thinkers. NO! This was not the beginning of “pole” dancing. I remember the statues in the park and the student art displayed in the stores and art contests celebrated with parades and prizes. I walked around the corner of our home with a peanut butter sandwich and lingered in front of Ernest Hemingway’s house or the home of Edgar Rice Burroughs (author of Tarzan). I would close my eyes and listen to see if I could hear where their ideas came from. Yes. I was a little weird even then as you can see from my art. But my husband Rick and I were fortunate to Have Frank Lloyd Wright’s Studio across from our grade school. Yes, art was everywhere we turned. I have a question for all of you. Please write or email me as to why you think we should have art in public places. I want our local government to know and I will present your comments it to them. I have already started on this project. Jenniffer Norman graciously offered us a new home for Founder’s Day. We will exhibit at KE Cellars (just off the square) in downtown Rockwall and across from the Bin 303 restaurant. Betty Foster and Ginny Hibbard are recruiting volunteers for our Artreach program geared to bring art lessons to the intellectually and socially challenged adult population which is estimated at 2700 individuals in Rockwall County. Ginny and Betty headed out to Royce City for the first lesson and were enthusiastically received. Betty cannot do it alone, so help us out. Please check our workshop schedule as we have an array of talented and fun artists giving workshops in the coming months. Have any ideas to promote our Fall Fine Art Show in October? This event is the ONLY fine arts show in Rockwall. We need your help and your volunteer time during the October 18th–22nd time frame. An hour of your time will be greatly appreciated and required if you are exhibiting your work. The Rockwall Art League has evolved into a valuable resource in the Rockwall Community. Share your ideas, share your time and share your talent. Betty Jean Hoaglund

THE ROCKWALL ART LEAGUE SCHOLARSHIP WINNER It is with great pleasure to announce that the Rockwall Art League scholarship committee has selected Kaitlin York as the 2012 recipient of the $1,000 Tom Collins Memorial Scholarship. Kaitlin York, is a senior at Rockwall-Heath High School. She plans to attend Auburn University and major in Industrial Engineering. Her portfolio was outstanding as were her grades and personal involvement in the community. We wish her the very best of luck in her with her college studies and design career. Tom Collins was a founding member of the Rockwall Art League in 2000. A talented and prolific artist, Tom enriched the community, was a good friend to many league members, and often mentored students interested in the fine arts. His family set up the original scholarship fund upon his death and the scholarship has been maintained by the Rockwall Art League in Tom's memory because of his devotion to the arts and the city of Rockwall. ROCKWALL COUNTY COURTHOUSE EXHIBIT The Rockwall Art League now has an exhibit on display in the rotunda of the new Rockwall courthouse. We acquired and assembled nine black easels for the month-long display at the courthouse. The commissioners voted unanimously to allow us 30 days to try it out. If successful we can continue the exhibit and rotate monthly to give all members the opportunity to display their art at the courthouse. Many thanks to Judge Hogan for initiating this exhibit of art in public places. The first exhibit is located in the rotunda on the first floor and contains 11 pieces. Media includes pottery, photography and paintings of oil, acrylic, and watercolor. The artists are: Darlene Dittoe, Betty Foster, Ginny Hibbard, Betty Hoaglund, Claudia Holt, Susan Jump, Thom Loafman, Barbara Scurlock, and Doris Vasek. The Rockwall County Courthouse is located at 1111 E. Yellowjacket Lane. ARTREACH: You can make a difference in somone's life! A few months ago the RAL board met with the chairman of ARC in Dallas. They are the granddaddy of helping people with developmental disabilities throughout the Dallas Metroplex. We loved hearing their stories and seeing the results of the fine art they accomplished. So BINGO! What a great project for RAL. We can help people in Rockwall County who have disabilities. We found out that many of the higher functioning children and adults are very talented and creative in drawing, painting, and sculpture. Some of the work they produce is as good as any found in most art shows. Many times these people are very shy and inward, but when it comes to creativity they blossom. It’s exciting! This is a start. Betty Foster and I have gone to Royse City and worked with 5 people the past few Thursdays. They blow us away with their creativity and enthusiasm The men and women are excited to learn and easy to work with. The director asked us if we would add on a few more days, because there are many more people would love to create art (we only take 5 or 6 at a time). This is not just busy work. These people are serious about wanting to learn more about art. Many hands make little work We had a tutorial meeting on Monday, April 23 Hopefully, this will be a project that RAL can do for the communities in Rockwall County for many years to come. We can expand to our own place and have more sessions and involve more people. As we grow larger, it’s a possibility that we can include volunteers from area organizations such as the Junior Service League and area churches to. This is a RAL project, but anyone is invited to volunteer. Contact Betty Foster to learn more. Betty’s phone number is (972) 722-9302 and her email address is artbybf@gmail.com. |
