AUGUST WORKSHOP: Abstract Paintings Created in Oil Mixed with Cold Wax Medium
A Rebecca Crowell Workshop

Date: August 2-4, 2012 9:30-4:30 each day

Location: North Dallas

Come learn Rebecca Crowell's method for paintings that are built up in layers, with each layer affecting and influencing those above, creating an organic texture and a sense of depth and complexity. Her use of cold wax medium mixed with oil paints give an encaustic-like look without heat and ventilation requirements of encaustics. The paintings are done on board panels. The panels give strength that allows the artist to fully experiment and explore the medium.

Since earning her MFA in painting from Arizona State University in 1985, Rebecca Crowell has led a life focused on painting. She has worked almost daily in her studio in western Wisconsin, with time out for travels and painting in England, Spain, the Western US, and the Canary Island of Lanzarote. In the fall of 2011, she was an artist in residence at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre at Annamaghkerrig, in Ireland. Rebecca Crowell is represented by fine art galleries in New Mexico, Colorado, Toronto and Wisconsin. She has recently signed with an agent to represent her in Ireland and the UK, and was featured in an exhibit in Dublin, Ireland in October of 2011. A solo show is scheduled for Belfast, Northern Ireland in 2012.

Artist’s Statement

The sources of my ideas are varied and interwoven, with the colors and textures of nature playing a large role. Memories, impressions and personal symbols all figure in as well, as do elements of pure abstraction. There is interplay in my work between appreciation of the natural world and the desire to organize and manipulate the environment.

I use a variety of techniques for making marks and laying down areas of color, including some I learned many years ago in printmaking. I build up many layers of paint, and also scrape, gouge, and dissolve parts of the layers so that underlying bits emerge. The result is a surface that is complex in texture and nuances of color. Thus there is a correlation between the organic look and feel of my work with the process of making it.

Each painting is an open-ended exploration, undertaken with a blend of spontaneity and careful analysis. It is my hope that in the end, my work has a certain clarity and integrity that invotes contemplation.

Cost: $380
Deposit: $100
